How to Write a Cover Letter – Template

This is suggested structure for your covering letter:

Contact info:

[Your Name] Sender address and contact info at top. (Your address and the date can be left-justified, or centered.)

[Today’s Date: Month, Day, Year]

[Hiring manager’s name] (if you have it)
[Hiring manager’s company name]
[Company address]


Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. LastName:
(Include the company contact’s name if you have it. Otherwise use “Dear Sirs”)

Paragraph 1 – Introduction:

The first paragraph of your letter should include information on why you are writing. Mention the position you are applying for and where you found the job (Sales Associate) listing. Include the name of a mutual contact, if you have one.

Paragraph 2 and 3 – Description:

This section of the letter is where you justify why you should be considered as a candidate. You can refer your qualifications to the specific job requirements, using examples of your experiences and achievements to convey your knowledge and skills. Use wording similar to the job description and make a connection between your experiences and the duties/tasks of the position. You should highlight or add pertinent details of interest to the employer, do not simply duplicate the information on your resume.

Paragraph 4 – Closing:

This is a short paragraph that conclude your cover letter by a positive statement that will motivate the employer to contact you and thanking employer in advance for their time and mention your attached resume. Tell the employer that you are looking forward to an interview and let them know you will be in contact by a specific date.

Email Cover Letter tips

In case of sending your cover letter via email, in the email body include the salutation, write your contact information in your email signature, and mention your attached resume. Also write a Subject line, that should includes your name and job position (e.g. Sales Associate). Never use an unprofessional email address.
