Cover Letter Template

Key points of a cover letter are:

Your Name
Home address
City, Province, Postal code
e-mail address

Date: Month, Day, Year

Contact name
Job title
Company name

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name, (leave out if you don’t have a contact or using Dear Hiring Manager)

First paragraph:

Introduce yourself to the recruiter. Explain who you are, (e.g. My name is John Doe and I am currently studying for a BA in Geography at the University of Manchester) and why are you writing to the company/organisation. Make sure you point out where you found details of the vacancy (Surgical Technologist position) you are applying for and if appropriate, mention that you have enclosed your resume.

Middle paragraphs:

Here is your chance to tell why you are interested in the employer or type of work the employer does (Simply stating that you are interested does not tell why, and can sound like a form letter). Show that you know enough about the employer or position to relate your background to the employer or position. Write about specific qualifications which make you a good fit for the employer’s needs. (Focus on what you can do for the employer, not what the employer can do for you.) This is an opportunity to explain in more detail relevant items in your resume. Refer to the fact that your resume is enclosed.

In the closing paragraph ask to arrange an interview. It is important to end your letter in a kind way. For example: I trust I have convinced you that I have the qualities and commitment that will make me an excellent employee at [name of company]. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss my application further.

Always end your covering letter with “Yours sincerely” if you have addressed it to a named contact (e.g. Mr. Adam Smith)
or with “Yours faithfully” if you have not addressed it to anyone specific.

Emailing an Cover letter

If you are sending your cover letter via email, your full contact info appears below your printed name [instead of at the top, as for hard copy], and of course there is no handwritten signature.
